I Netflixed HBO’s True Blood (season one) a while back. I was kind of disgusted with myself for loving it, as it seemed to be a rip off of the Twilight series (which is NOT good if you’re over, oh, say, 17), with some things reversed, but Google search results came to my rescue, educating me about The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, so I felt loads better.
Whilst waiting for season two to come out on DVD, I read Dead Until Dark and just finished listening to Living Dead in Dallas last week. Season one of True Blood (sort of) follows book one and parts of book two. Jason’s s e x* scenes are not in either book. Not a one. They don’t do a thing for me, since he’s dumb as a post, but I imagine other people enjoy them tremendously. The departure from the novels that I didn’t enjoy was the storyline stemming from episode nine, where Bill stakes the bartender. Harris had Eric stake the bartender. Maybe the HBO folks needed to create relationship tension between Sookie and Bill, and that was the easiest way, but the original version seems more logical and the ensuing TV storyline frivolous. I didn’t enjoy watching it, and I really dislike it now that I’ve read the original.
I may read the rest of the novels on long trips when I’ve nothing else at hand. I’m still waiting impatiently for the next season of the TV series, though.
